In the Heart of Tanjong Pagar, A Portal to the Divine
Tucked amongst trendy cafés, Say Tian Hng Buddha Shop is a hidden gem — a 6th-generation workshop dedicated to hand-crafting Daoist and Buddhist deities since 1840.
Step into a space filled with hundreds of wooden statues, from courageous warlords to drunk monks, stern magistrates to miniature serpents and parrots, each a vivid embodiment of spiritual myth and cultural memory.
Led by docents trained by the Ng family, this tour unveils the world of religious iconography and the time-honoured techniques passed down through generations.
Learn how deities are identified by their facial features, attire, and accessories, and hear stories of Grandma Ng, who raised seven children while running the business.
You'll be able to see the artisans at work and learn how the family is blending tradition with innovation to carry the craft into the future.
